Attractions around the Riviera Maya
Central AmericaThe Riviera Maya is a popular area along the Caribbean coast, located in the state of Quintana Roo. The area is particularly popular for its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water. Numerous Mayan sites are also found in this region. The area stretches from Puerto Morelos to Carrillo Puerto.
Visit to La Quinta Avenida
Playa del Carmen is a true seaside resort. You can relax on the beach, for example, at Playa Mamitas. You'll also find many charming shops and bars along the, rather touristy, La Quinta Avenida, also known as 5th Avenue.

The beautiful island of Cozumel
You can take a ferry from Playa del Carmen to the island of Cozumel. The boat trip takes about 45 minutes. The island is perfect for snorkeling or boating, but be aware of the many cruise ships that dock there daily. On the south side of the island, you'll find Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, an ecological park with reefs, beaches, lagoons, and low-lying forests.
Swimming in cenote Azul
A conote is a cave or pool filled with water and is also called "waterhole". Several cenotes can be found in the area around the Mayan Riviera. The most famous cenote, Cenote Azul, is accessible from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum and costs 140 pesos to visit. Cenote Azul is an open-air cenote, meaning its opening is exposed to the open air. There are also semi-closed and closed cenotes in this area, which are (partially) underground in a cave. It's wonderful to spend a few hours swimming in the refreshing water.
Visit ruins with a view over the sea
Tulum is considered a laid-back area with beautiful beaches. It's also a great place to cycle, and you'll encounter beautiful murals along the way. The most popular attraction in Tulum is the Tulum Ruins, which can be visited for 80 pesos. Note: only purchase a ticket for the ruins at the information desk of the ruins themselves.
Turtle spotting in Akumal
Many people come to Akumal to snorkel, where you can see beautiful fish, stingrays, and even turtles. It's possible to go turtle hunting on your own, but there are also many tours offered that offer a better chance of seeing them. A good place for turtle spotting is at Half Moon Bay. Between May and October, turtles lay eggs on the beach, making this the best time to see these magnificent creatures.
Cycling through the Mayan site of Cobá
A visit to a Mayan site is a must when visiting the Mayan Riviera. The temples of Cobá are nestled in the jungle and are one of the oldest temple sites in the Yucatan. At the Cobá ruins, you can admire several magnificent temples either on foot or by bike. Cycling is especially recommended, as it offers a unique experience. Cobá is somewhat quieter compared to the more famous and equally beautiful Chichen Itza.

Unique boat trip in Sian Ka'an
Sian Ka'an is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was called "the place where heaven was born" by the Mayans, in short a must-visit when visiting the area. On land, you'll find a swamp with ruins and various bird species, and in the clear blue water, you'll find various fish, and perhaps even dolphins and turtles.
Other nice places
Officially, the places listed below are not part of the Riviera Maya, but they are easily accessible from the Riviera Maya.
Holbox: Cycling, beautiful beaches, flamingo and whale shark spotting: it's all possible on the beautiful tropical island of Holbox.
Valladolid: This charming city with its beautiful colorful houses serves as the perfect base for exploring the most famous Mayan site, Chichén Itzá. There are also several beautiful cenotes around the city, such as Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman and Cenote Suytun (note: you may have to queue for a photo at Suytun).
Bacalar: Also known as "the Maldives of Mexico" because of its clear blue water, you can swim, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and sail on this stunning lake. Read all about this beautiful place in my blog post about Bacalar.
From bustling streets to quiet cenotes and pristine nature, the Riviera Maya has it all.
