City trip to fairytale Prague

Europe
Published on September 11, 2022

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and its official name is hlavní město Praha, or "Praha" for short. Situated on the Vltava River, the city is also known as the "golden city." This name refers primarily to the many beautiful buildings you can find in the city. Besides the fact that these buildings are worth admiring, you'll find more highlights of Prague in this blog post.

Transport in Prague

If your hotel or accommodation is in the Old Town, you can reach many highlights on foot. Both day and night, you can wander Prague's charming streets for hours. For places a little further afield, such as Prague Castle or Petřín Hill, you can use the tram or rent a bike. You can also use the scooters offered by Lime or Bolt.

Highlights Prague

The beautiful old town square

If you're looking for photos of Prague, you're guaranteed to come across Old Town Square. The square is centrally located in the city, so you'll undoubtedly pass by it several times. The square is surrounded by beautiful, colorful houses and charming terraces. There are also several must-see attractions, such as St. Nicholas Church and the Gothic Týn Church. The most famous landmark is the Astronomical Clock Tower. Every hour, many visitors gaze at this oldest and still-functioning astronomical clock.

The unique Lennon Wall

On the west side of Prague 1, you'll find the Lennon Wall: a beautifully painted mural. Although it's not very large, it's a must-see during your city break. The wall originated in the 1980s, when it was covered in graffiti inspired by John Lennon and the Beatles. Today, the wall is still regularly covered with local and international protests and art.

A beautiful view from Prague Castle (Praszký Hrad)

Once again on the west side of Prague 1, you'll find Prague Castle. Prague Castle is a complex of several churches and beautiful palaces. Certain parts of the castle are freely accessible, such as the gardens and the castle corridors, which you can explore for free. In addition, three types of tickets are available (from €11) that grant access to different parts of the castle. You can admire, among other things, St. Vitus Cathedral and the Old Royal Palace. At the end of the walk, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the city.

Walking over the Charles Bridge (Karlův most)

The most famous bridge in Prague is undoubtedly the Charles Bridge. Cars are not allowed on this bridge, so you'll only encounter pedestrians. While it sounds peaceful, it can get quite busy here, especially with the many street vendors and beautiful statues. The bridge is hard to miss when walking to Prague Castle from Old Town Square and is definitely a must-see when visiting Prague.

Visit the dancing house

Since 1996, Prague has been home to the unique "Dancing House," a modern, eye-catching building. Because the building is an office building, you can't visit the interior, but it's definitely worth admiring the exterior. You'll find the building on the east side of Jiráskův Bridge.

Water fun on the Vltava River

A very popular activity in Prague is boating on the water. At any time of day, you'll see various pedal boats on the Vltava River, from swans to cars and even regular pedal boats. It's especially beautiful to "cycle" across the water in the evening, when many buildings and bridges are illuminated, offering a magical view from the water.

Climb the Eiffel Tower of Prague (Petřín Tower)

At Petřín Hill, you'll find a remarkable building: Prague's Eiffel Tower. It's even said that this tower is taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but opinions differ because the hill is included in the height calculation. It's definitely worth taking the elevator up the hill to admire the tower up close. There's also a (small) mirror maze, and you can stroll around the beautiful green surroundings.
