The Magic of Barcelona: From Gaudí to Beaches
EuropeBarcelona is Spain's second-largest city and attracts millions of tourists every year. Its (usually) beautiful weather and blend of culture, history, and modernity make it the perfect city break destination. In this blog post, I'll take you on a tour of the most beautiful sights this vibrant city has to offer.
Where to stay?
Barcelona is made up of different districts, which are further divided into neighborhoods, known as 'barris'. The most famous districts are Ciutat Vella (the old town), Eixample (known for its Art Nouveau buildings), Gràcia (the former suburb), Sants-Montjuïc (a large district partially on a hill), and Sant Martí (by the coast). The city's attractions are spread across these different neighborhoods, each with its own unique vibe.
Personally, my favorite neighborhoods to stay in are the trendy, car-free El Born and the atmospheric, medieval Barri Gòtic. Both are located in the old town and offer a perfect mix of charm and history.
In El Born, you'll find lovely shops and cozy restaurants and bars. The narrow cobblestone streets of Barri Gòtic lead you to delightful squares, such as Plaça Reial, a lively square brimming with restaurants and bars. Even if you're not staying here, it's highly recommended to visit these charming neighborhoods.

The highlights of Barcelona

Things to do in Barcelona
Admire the mosaics at Park Güell
Just like many other iconic buildings in Barcelona, Park Güell was designed by the famous architect Antoni Gaudí. This 12-hectare urban park, located in the district of Gràcia, offers impressive views and is a work of art in itself, with colorful buildings, artworks, and plenty of mosaics. The park is built on a hill, creating several levels.
Originally, the homes in the park were intended as residences, but since only two houses were sold, the park was converted into a private garden for events. One of these houses is now the Casa Museu Gaudí, where you can learn all about the life and work of the famous architect. Surrounding the house, you'll find beautiful trees and plants that complete the scenery.
As of 2023, part of the park was free to visit, but that has changed. Nowadays, only 700 people can enter the park every half hour, so it's important to book your tickets in advance. Note: on some days, tickets sell out quickly, so be sure to plan ahead if you want to visit the park for sure.

This restaurant and club is known for its stunning panoramic views of the city and the sea. The menu includes a variety of tapas and fish dishes. Mirablau is a fifteen-minute drive from Park Güell. It's about 40 minutes by public transport.

The most famous attraction in Barcelona is undoubtedly the Sagrada Família, also designed by Antoni Gaudí. This impressive cathedral, located in the Eixample district, has been under construction for years and is expected to be completed in 2026.
To visit the interior, beautifully decorated with colorful stained glass, you'll likely have to wait in a long line. Fortunately, you can book your ticket online to save time. Keep in mind that the Sagrada Família gets very crowded. If you're looking for a more relaxing activity, you can admire the enchanting exterior: it's just as impressive and beautifully decorated.
You can also admire the Sagrada Família from a distance. At the Bunkers del Carmel, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city after a sometimes somewhat steep climb. This viewpoint, located on Turó de la Rovira, offers one of Barcelona's most beautiful panoramic views. The bunkers themselves are slightly less spectacular, but the view more than makes up for it.
Relaxing in Parc de la Ciutadella
Although Parc de la Ciutadella is on the edge of Barcelona's city center, it's a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The park is ideal for a peaceful stroll and offers plenty of opportunities to unwind between sightseeing.

Be sure to take the time to admire the Cascada Monumental fountain and stroll along the small lake, where you can even rent a rowboat. At the edge of the park stands Spain's very own Arc de Triomf, a beautiful landmark that's definitely not to be missed.
As you walk towards the park, you'll pass one of Barcelona's most beautiful concert halls: the Palau de la Música Catalana. This impressive, ornately decorated building was designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Besides admiring the exterior and the hall for free, you can also explore the beautifully decorated building during a concert or on a guided tour.

Be sure to visit Casa Vicens, Gaudí’s first house in Barcelona. Gaudí drew inspiration for the design from flowers and plants such as marigolds, passionflowers, and ivy. These natural elements are reflected in various places in the beautifully colorful design. Located in the Graciá district, you can explore some of the building’s rooms with an audio guide. Fun workshops, such as ceramic painting, are also regularly organized.
Not far from Casa Vicens is Casa Batlló, another iconic work by Gaudí. This famous building on Passeig de Gràcia stands out for its undulating shapes and striking façade and is a must-see for lovers of modernist architecture. Tip: visit Casa Batlló early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and experience the best light on the façade.

Enjoy the view from Montjuïc Park
In the district of Montjuïc, you'll find a beautiful park where you can roam freely. The literal highlight of the park is at the top of the hill: the Montjuïc Castle, which provides stunning views of the city and the sea. You can reach the castle on foot via the walking paths through the park.
After your visit to the castle, you can take the cable car, which offers spectacular views of the city and the harbor, to Barceloneta beach. Platja de Sant Sebastià is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and unwind.
