The Magic of Barcelona: From Gaudí to Beaches

Europe
Published on February 10, 2025

Barcelona is Spain's second-largest city and attracts millions of tourists every year. Its (usually) beautiful weather and blend of culture, history, and modernity make it the perfect city break destination. In this blog post, I'll take you on a tour of the most beautiful sights this vibrant city has to offer.

Where to stay?

Barcelona is made up of different districts, which are further divided into neighborhoods, known as 'barris'. The most famous districts are Ciutat Vella (the old town), Eixample (known for its Art Nouveau buildings), Gràcia (the former suburb), Sants-Montjuïc (a large district partially on a hill), and Sant Martí (by the coast). The city's attractions are spread across these different neighborhoods, each with its own unique vibe. Personally, my favorite neighborhoods to stay in are the trendy, car-free El Born and the atmospheric, medieval Barri Gòtic. Both are located in the old town and offer a perfect mix of charm and history. In El Born, you'll find lovely shops and cozy restaurants and bars. The narrow cobblestone streets of Barri Gòtic lead you to delightful squares, such as Plaça Reial, a lively square brimming with restaurants and bars.

Things to do in Barcelona

Admire the mosaics at Park Güell

Just like many other iconic buildings in Barcelona, Park Güell was designed by the famous architect Antoni Gaudí. This 12-hectare urban park, located in the district of Gràcia, offers impressive views and is a work of art in itself, with colorful buildings, artworks, and plenty of mosaics. The park is built on a hill, creating several levels. Originally, the homes in the park were intended as residences, but since only two houses were sold, the park was converted into a private garden for events. One of these houses is now the Casa Museu Gaudí, where you can learn all about the life and work of the famous architect. Surrounding the house, you'll find beautiful trees and plants that complete the scenery.

As of 2023, part of the park was free to visit, but that has changed. Nowadays, only 700 people can enter the park every half hour, so it's important to book your tickets in advance. Note: on some days, tickets sell out quickly, so be sure to plan ahead if you want to visit the park for sure.

Strolling by the impressive Sagrada Familia

Without a doubt, the most famous attraction in Barcelona is the Sagrada Família, also designed by Antoni Gaudí. This impressive cathedral, located in the Eixample district, has been under construction for years and is expected to be completed in 2026. For an inside visit, adorned with beautiful stained glass, you will likely have to stand in line for a while. Fortunately, you can reserve your ticket online to save time. Keep in mind that the Sagrada Família is very popular; if you're looking for a quieter activity, you can admire the enchanting exterior, which is just as impressive and beautifully decorated.

Relaxing in Parc de la Ciutadella

Although Parc de la Ciutadella is located on the edge of Barcelona's city center (in the Ciutat Vella district), it’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle for a bit. The park is ideal for a peaceful stroll, and you can truly unwind. Don't forget to visit the impressive fountain and the small lake surrounded by greenery, where you can even rent rowboats. At the edge of the park, you'll find Spain's own Arc de Triomphe, which is definitely worth admiring.

Casa Vicens: Gaudí’s colorful beginning in Barcelona

Be sure to visit Casa Vicens, Gaudí's first designed house in Barcelona. You’ll find the building in the Gràcia district, and you can explore some rooms of the building with an audio guide. Additionally, fun workshops such as (ceramic) painting are regularly organized, which you can participate in. Gaudí was inspired for the design by flowers and plants, such as marigolds, passionflowers, and ivy. These natural elements are reflected in different aspects of the beautifully colorful design.

Enjoy the view from Montjuïc Park

In the district of Montjuïc, you'll find a beautiful park where you can roam freely. The literal highlight of the park is at the top of the hill: the Montjuïc Castle, which provides stunning views of the city and the sea. You can reach the castle on foot via the walking paths through the park. After your visit to the castle, you can take the cable car, which offers spectacular views of the city and the harbor, down to Barceloneta Beach. This is the ideal spot to leave the city's hustle and bustle behind and find some peace.
